The Spiral of Light in the Golden Dawn Neophyte Ceremony

The lighting and extinguishing of the candles in the Neophyte Ceremony represents more than simply opening and closing the Temple. It follows the principle of an expanding and contracting spiral, expressing the movement of Light from its central source into manifestation and its eventual return to that source.

During the opening, the candles are lit from the centre outwards. This represents the emergence of Light from a single point, gradually extending its influence throughout the Temple. Each additional flame becomes an extension of the original Light, illustrating the Hermetic principle of the One becoming the Many. There is also a Qabalistic parallel here with the emanation of the Sephiroth, where the Divine Light progressively unfolds from Kether towards Malkuth. The lighting sequence is not a literal representation of the Lightning Flash, but both express the same general principle of movement from unity into multiplicity.

At the closing, this movement is reversed. The outer candles are extinguished first, gradually working back towards the centre. This creates a contracting spiral, symbolising the withdrawal of the forces established during the opening. The Light is not destroyed but symbolically returned to its source. The Temple moves from a condition of active manifestation back into one of rest, ready for its next opening.

The process can also be compared to breathing. The opening is an outward breath, extending the Light throughout the Temple, while the closing is an inward breath, drawing everything back towards the centre. Together, they form a complete cycle of expansion and contraction. There is also an alchemical parallel with the processes of separation and recombination, where something is divided into its individual expressions before being brought together again.

An important point is that the centre remains constant throughout both movements. Although the Light expands and contracts, its originating principle does not change. This reflects a central idea in Hermetic philosophy: manifestation may take many forms, but all remain connected to the unity from which they emerged.

The spiral therefore provides a useful way of understanding the candle-lighting ceremony. The opening represents the One becoming the Many, while the closing represents the Many returning to the One. Both movements belong to the same process, giving the Temple a symbolic rhythm of awakening, activity, withdrawal and rest.
