Purification & Consecration in the Neophyte Ritual

When studying some of the early Golden Dawn rituals, it becomes apparent that in the 0=0 Ceremony the acts of Purification and Consecration are performed separately by the Stolistes and the Dadouchos. In other rituals, however, particularly those of the Stella Matutina, these actions are often performed simultaneously, with both officers working directly opposite one another, much like the two hands of a clock forming a straight line. One question I have never been able to answer conclusively is whether this distinction represented a strict divide between the original Golden Dawn and the later Stella Matutina, or whether the simultaneous method was also employed as an option within some of the early Golden Dawn temples.

In Regardie’s published rituals, the officers are positioned more like the quarter-hour marks on a clock face, rather than directly opposite one another. This was certainly not the practice in New Zealand. When I questioned Jack Taylor about the difference, he instructed me to use the half-hour, face-to-face positions. He added that if I performed the work often enough and correctly, I would eventually discover the reason for it myself. He was right.

The real significance of this arrangement lies in the balance of opposites that it establishes. Both officers must maintain a peripheral awareness of one another throughout the operation, creating a subtle but continuous energetic connection. This positioning forms a cleaner and stronger link between them, allowing their auric fields to interact more directly. Over time, this connection becomes extremely powerful, and it needs to be, for the effectiveness of the ritual depends upon it.

The relationship between these officers functions on several levels, but the foundation of the connection is established through their god-forms, which embody the complementary forces represented by Purification and Consecration. Although the god-forms are initially activated by the Hierophant before the ceremony begins as part of the anchoring process, this secondary activation through direct ritual interaction is particularly potent. The officers experience the connection very strongly on an individual level, and this heightened awareness allows them to interact through their subtle bodies as well as through their physical actions.

As the link deepens, it opens a more refined operational awareness. Each officer becomes increasingly conscious not only of his or her own role and function, but also of the energetic state of the other. This shared field of awareness strengthens the balance of the ritual current and helps establish the conditions necessary for the ceremonial work that follows.
